Gregorian chant practice

One chant, one sitting.

An ison is the sustained tone held beneath a chanted line. The app works the same way: a steady note underneath, not a performance.

What it is

  • Four movements. Each sitting follows lectio, meditatio, oratio and contemplatio. A slow upward swipe moves forward; there is no going back.
  • One chant. The app chooses, by season of the liturgical year. There is no library to browse and nothing to optimise.
  • A wordless tone. The Latin is read silently. Any sound is a tone, never a spoken or sung rendering of the words.
  • Presence only. A plain dot calendar marks the days you sat, with no counts or percentages.
  • On the wrist. An Apple Watch companion offers a silent, haptic-marked timed session.

Questions

Do I need to read music?

No. The chant notation is used behind the scenes. What you see is the Latin text, held in the four movements of lectio divina.

Why only one chant?

Choosing is a form of browsing, and browsing is what the app refuses. One chant, suited to the season, is enough for a sitting.
